Officers of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland 

President of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland : Ms Mary Kennedy 

Mary is the an Irish Prison Service  Assistant Governor  currently assigned to Mountjoy Female Prison (Dochas Centre) in the IPS. She graduated as a Registered General Nurse from in St Vincent’s Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin 1989 with first class honours. She also qualified with a Higher Diploma in Healthcare from RCSI; a Post Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Risk Management & Quality from UCD;  and a Diploma in Law from the Law Society of Ireland  with an award for constitutional law. More recently she obtained an advanced Diploma in Employment Law from the Honorable Society of the Kings Inns and Health and Safety certification from UCD.

Mary was a Chief Nurse Officer in the Irish Prison Service promoting best nursing practice from 2008-2018. She has appointed  as an Assistant Governor since 2018 to Cloverhill and Mountjoy Prisons . She is currently assigned to Mountjoy Female Prison where she manages a portfolio of healthcare, operational and rehabilitative regimes; risk and compliance; human resources; work and training; health and Safety. Mary has a special interest in human rights and custodial care. She was previously the Honorary Secretary of the Medico-Legal Society since 2019.

Immediate Past-President (2021-2023): Ms. Cathrina Keville BL 

Ms. Cathrina Keville BL is a practicing barrister and an MII accredited and practicing mediator.  She is a graduate in law from Trinity College Dublin and has a Master’s Degree in European Law from the University of Exeter in the UK.  She has a diploma in mediation from the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland. Cathrina practices in Dublin and on the Midland Circuit in civil, family and child protection law and has a special interest in the protection of vulnerable clients and in alternative dispute resolution.

Cathrina is a Chairperson of Mental Health Tribunals as well as an adjudicator and mediator with the Residential Tenancies Board.  She has also chaired certain fitness to practice committees. She previously lectured on European Law at UCD and DIT and she is an instructor on the Advanced Diploma in Mediation run by the Honorable Society of the Kings Inns.  Cathrina is a member of the Arbitration and ADR Committee of the Bar Council of Ireland. She was elected to the Council of the Society in 2018 and has served on the sub-committees of the society responsible for organising the annual academic days and compiling its programme of events.  Cathrina is the outgoing President of the Medico-Legal Society   having served her two-year term since 2021.


Honorary Secretary: Ms Yvanne  Kennedy.

Ms Yvanne Kennedy is an Associate solicitor in Mason Hayes & Curran LLP. She specialises in public and administrative law, with a focus on professional regulation, particularly in the healthcare field. In addition to her regulatory work, Yvanne has experience  in advising clients in the public  sector with  variety of legal issues. These include responding to statutory investigations; regulation of quasi-judicial bodies; and revision of policy and procedure.

Yvanne is also experienced  in the internal management of disciplinary processes and has also represented public bodies in the defence of judicial review proceedings .She is a law graduate of University College Dublin (BCL, Prof Dip) and Queen’s University Belfast (LL.M).

Honorary Treasurer: Dr Zetti Azvee 

Dr Zetti Azvee is an alumna of National University of Ireland (UCD), Penang Medical College, Malaysia and Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. She is a member of Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK) and College of Psychiatrists Ireland.Following completion of an Aspire Fellowship in Transplant Psychiatry, Dr Azvee now works as a Consultant Psychiatrist in north inner-city Dublin with a special interest in bridging the gap between primary care and specialist services. Dr Azvee’s past work experience includes time in the Western Sahara and the Lebanon with the United Nations.

Council Member: Mr Anthony Carmody

Anthony Carmody, Solicitor and Notary Public,  is a partner in Carmody Moran Solicitors LLP, specialising in capacity / mental health law, family law, probate litigation, and catastrophic personal injury.  Since 2006 he has been a Legal Representative for persons detained under the Mental Health Acts and, previously, the Criminal Law (Insanity) Act. He is a graduate of Maynooth University, with post graduate qualifications in Family Law, Trust / Estate Management and Notarial Studies. He has been a member of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland since 2016.

Council Member: Dr Simone Carton

Dr. Simone Carton has been a member of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland for over 20 years.  Her area of expertise is clinical neuropsychology, and she is the Head of Department of Psychology at the National Rehabilitation Hospital.  Her clinical expertise is personality and behaviour changes following neurological illness/injury.  Simone is also interested in areas (and dilemmas) where the clinical and legal interface, such as memory, decision-making and reasoning and judgement. Simone very much enjoys being a member of council, supporting the society to achieve its aims to promote a lively forum to learn and discuss matters medical and legal.


Council Member: Ms Aisling Gannon SC

Aisling Gannon is a long-standing member of the MLS, and an active and engaged Council member for many of those years.  She practiced for almost 25 years as a medico-legal litigation solicitor and advisor, previously being Partner and Head of Healthcare with a global law firm. She was recognised as a ‘leading legal advisor’ in the Irish healthcare sector by Chambers and Legal 500 legal directories for 10 years. She was appointed a Patent of Precedence by the Minister for Justice in 2022, in acknowledgement of her medico-legal experience and expertise.  In 2020 she was appointed Deputy Coroner in the Dublin District by the Minister for Justice.In June 2022 she was appointed and took up a full time role as a Coroner in Dublin. She is a regular lecturer on the Law Society of Ireland’s Healthcare Certificate and Diploma programmes. She is a Diversity & Inclusion ally and advocate, sitting on the Department of Justice’s staff LGBTQ steering group, and on the Board of youth charity Belongto

Council Member: Mr Aidan Gleeson

Mr Aidan Gleeson FRCSI, FRCSEd(A&E), DA(UK), FRCEM, FFSEM qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 1987 and undertook Higher Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine in Manchester and Edinburgh. He was appointed as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery to St George's Hospital and Medical School, London in 1997 and became Clinical Director there in 1998. He returned to Ireland in 2000 as the Lead Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin and was Clinical Director for Medicine at Beaumont Hospital 2011-2012. He was Clinical Lead for the establishment of the Emergency Department at Blackrock Clinic and served as Clinical Director of Emergency Medicine there 2010-2015. He subsequently served as Medical Director at Blackrock Clinic 2015-2019. He retired from Beaumont Hospital in 2021 and is currently engaged in full time medico-legal practice. He regularly delivers lectures to doctors, solicitors and insurance companies on medico-legal matters relating to Personal Injury and Medical Negligence claims. He has several publications in peer reviewed journals related to Emergency Medicine and has acted as a referee for the Emergency Medicine Journal and the European Journal of Emergency Medicine. He developed and ran the first course in Regional Anaesthesia for Emergency Physicians in the UK and Ireland in 1994 and has lectured and run workshops on this skill at national and international meetings. He has previously been an Instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Paediatric Life Support. He was Secretary of the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine 2002-2005 and was a National Council Member of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association 2002-2005. 

Council Member: Dr Kate Maddock

Dr Catherine (Kate) Maddock graduated in medicine from Trinity College Dublin in 1991. She is a Consultant in Intellectual Disability Psychiatry for Kildare/West Wicklow since 2020.She spent eight years working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Northern Ireland before returning to Dublin and completing The Dublin University Training Scheme in Psychiatry in 2009. Kate  completed the Aspire Fellowship in Adult ADHD in 2020. She has been the Vice Chair of the Faculty of Intellectual Disability at the Irish College of Psychiatrists for two terms. She is a member of the Human Rights and Ethics committee of The Irish College of Psychiatrists.


Council Member: Dr Carlos McDowell

Dr. Carlos McDowell is a graduate of medicine from Trinity College, Dublin. She specialised in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine, graduating with Fellowships from both the Irish and London Colleges of Anaesthesia. She worked as a consultant in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for 29 years. Dr McDowell also worked part-time with the Turf Club and Irish Racecourses attending racing events throughout the country as a pre-hospital trauma doctor until retirement in 2019. Dr McDowell joined the Society in 2010, was elected as a member of Council in 2013, and was nominated and elected as Hon. Treasurer at the Society’s AGM in June 2014 and held that position until 2018. She is a current member of the Council. 

Council Member: Ms Aoife McManus

Aoife McManus is a Clinical Nurse Specialist working within the National Forensic Mental Health Service. Aoife has provided specialist care and treatment across a variety of settings from acute inpatient units to both male and female prisons. She is currently the clinical nurse specialist on the Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, a recently developed national service which also provides in-reach mental health services to Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus. Aoife has been awarded degrees in the fields of mental health and addiction, including an MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (UCD), an MA in Addiction Studies (DBS), a PGDip in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health (TCD), and a BSc in Psychiatric Nursing (DCU). Aoife has been the Medico-Legal Society Webinar Coordinator since 2020.

Immediate Past-President (2019-2021): Professor Damian Mohan. Professor Damian Mohan. Damian is Associate Clinical Professor in Forensic Psychiatry in Trinity College Dublin. He is a TCD medical graduate. Upon completion of his Basic Specialist Training (BST)in psychiatry at St. Patrick's University Hospital Dublin, he completed his Higher Specialist Training (HST), between the University of Southampton and the Institute of Psychiatry in London. Damian then worked as a consultant in Broadmoor Hospital, West London NHS, before returning to Dublin in 2001. He was a consultant psychiatrist with the National Forensic Mental Health Service (NFMHS) until 2022. Since retiring from the HSE, Damian is the medical lead on the Clinical Management System (CMS) team, which is overseeing the digital transformative journey and introduction of electronic patient record (EPR) to the National Forensic Mental Health Services (NFMHS). Damian sits on the Board of Governors at St. Patrick's University Hospital. He lectures of the Advanced Diploma in Medical Law in the Kings Inns

Ms Kennedy is currently an Assistant Governor in Mountjoy Female Prison. Her current portfolio also includes Health and Safety, Human Resources and Infection Control compliance. Mary joined the Society in 2016 has been the  Honorary Secretary of the Medico-Legal Society since 2019.

She has strong interests in Liaison, Forensic and Homeless Psychiatry. Dr Azvee past work experience includes time in the Western Sahara and the Lebanon with the United Nations. She has been Treasurer of the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees and Vice Chair of the Trainee Committee for College of Psychiatrists of Ireland. She has a special interest in bridging the gap between primary care and specialist services.

Council member: Dr.Simone Carton is Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dublin.  She competed her professional training in Clinical Psychology at Trinity College Dublin and then pursued specialist training in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Institute of Psychiatry and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, London.  Her clinical and academic work focuses on the cognitive and behaviour changes associated with neurological disease and acquired brain injury, in particular decision-making, personality change and factors enhancing neuro-rehabilitation.  She lectures in Clinical Neuropsychology at TCD, UCD, UCG, RSCI and RCPI to post-graduates in health sciences and engineering.  She provides expert opinion in legal cases and is a member of the Medico-legal Society of Ireland for over ten years.

Council member: Ms Elizabeth Maguire S.C commenced practice at the bar in 1991 and was called to the Inner Bar in 2021.  She is graduate of Trinity College Dublin (LL.B.), and has a Master’s Degree in Medical Law (M.Litt.).  Elizabeth is also an accredited mediator (CEDR), and a member of Middle Temple, London.  Elizabeth is recognised as being a highly experienced and pragmatic adviser.  She advises on all aspects of civil and family law, including contentious and non-contentious matters, and is an experienced court advocate.  Her areas of practice include family relationships law, probate, and personal injury law.  She also has a keen practical interest in corporate governance and regulatory law, having been a Trustee of the Chester Beatty Library, a Board Member of Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, and a Board Member of the National Rehabilitation Hospital, where she has chaired the Ethics Committee of the NRH for a number of years.

Council member: Ms Aisling Timoney is a healthcare solicitor advising on the legal issues and challenges faced by medical professionals. GP Lead Counsel with Medisec Ireland, advising 2,300 Medisec members through clinical negligence claims, Medical Council complaints and Inquiries, Inquests and general ethical queries. Ministerial appointee to the Council for Health and Social Care Professionals as a representative of the public interest.  Previously worked in Matheson Healthcare team, Hayes Solicitors and the Medical Council of Ireland.  A regular contributor to medico-legal publications and an experienced public speaker. Currently an ordinary member of the Medico-Legal Society Council who shared responsibility for webinar coordination during the academic year 2020/2021

Hon Auditor: Dermot Manning BL  has been a practicing barrister since 1992, a Chairman of Mental Health Tribunals since 2006, a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Board since 2013 and a member of the Radiographers Registration Board since 2020. He was Treasurer of the Medico-Legal Society from 2001-09, President of the Society from 2009-11 and became its Honorary Auditor in 2018

European Council of Legal Medicine Representative: Prof. Denis Cusack BL, Coroner qualified as a medical doctor from UCD in 1980 and trained in General Internal Medicine & Diabetes/Endocrinology in Ireland and the USA. He qualified as Barrister-at-Law from the Kings Inns and was called to the Bar of Ireland in 1991. His medical specialty is Forensic & Legal Medicine. He was Full Professor of Forensic & Legal Medicine at the School of Medicine, University College Dublin (1991-2017) and at Penang Medical College, Malaysia (2000-2017) and is Full Professor Emeritus of Forensic & Legal Medicine at UCD since 2017. He was Coroner and latterly Senior Coroner for the District of Kildare (1995-2022). He has been Director of the Medical Bureau of Road Safety since 1997. He is Founding Consultant Editor of the Medico-Legal Journal of Ireland, is a Past President of the Coroners Society of Ireland (2008-2010) and the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland (2015-2017). He is currently President of the European Council of Legal Medicine, Vice-President of the Presidium (Council) of the International Academy of Legal Medicine, Board Member on the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the International Criminal Court’s Office of the Prosecutor

Immediate Past-President (2019-2021) Damian Mohan. Damian is Associate Clinical Professor in Forensic Psychiatry in Trinity College Dublin and  a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist based at the National Forensic Mental Health Service. He is currently the clinical lead on the Transition Management Team (TMT) with responsibility for relocating the Central Mental Hospital from Dundrum to Portrane.  Damian is a Medical Graduate of TCD.  After completing his Basic Specialist Training (BST) in St. Patrick’s University Hospital Dublin, he completed his Higher Specialist Training (HST) between the University of Southampton and the Institute of Psychiatry in London. Damian worked as a Consultant in  Broadmoor Hospital, West London NHS before returning to Dublin in 2001. Damian is a keen cyclist and sometime skier.  He is the Immediate Past- President of the Medicolegal Society of Ireland

Council Member:  Ms Elizebeth Maguire BL Ms Elizabeth Maguire  BL commenced practice at the bar in 1991.  She is graduate of Trinity College Dublin (LL.B.), and has a Master’s Degree in Medical Law (M.Litt.).  Elizabeth is also an accredited mediator (CEDR), and a member of Middle Temple, London.  She will be called to the Inner Bar in October 2021. Having practiced for many years, Elizabeth is recognised as being a highly experienced and pragmatic adviser.  She advises on all aspects of civil and family law, including contentious and non-contentious matters, and is an experienced court advocate.  Her areas of practice include family relationships law, probate, and personal injury law.  She also has a keen practical interest in corporate governance and regulatory law, having been a Trustee of the Chester Beatty Library, a Board Member of Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, and a Board Member of the National Rehabilitation Hospital, where she has chaired the Ethics Committee of the NRH for a number of years.  

Council Member: Dr. Carlos McDowell  is a graduate of medicine from Trinity College, Dublin. She specialised in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine, graduating with Fellowships from both the Irish and London Colleges of Anaesthesia. She worked as a consultant in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for 29 years. Dr McDowell also worked part-time with the Turf Club and Irish Racecourses attending racing events throughout the country as a pre-hospital trauma doctor. Dr McDowell joined the Society in 2010, was elected as a member of Council in 2015 and was nominated and elected as Hon. Treasurer at the Society’s AGM in June 2014 and held that position until 2018. She is a current member of the Council

Council member: Ms. Aoife McManus  is a Clinical Nurse Specialist working within the National Forensic Mental Health Service. Since 2012 Aoife has provided specialist care and treatment across a variety of settings from acute inpatient units to both male and female prisons. She is currently the clinical nurse specialist on the Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, a recently developed national service which also provides in-reach mental health services to Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus. Aoife has been awarded degrees in the fields of mental health and addiction, including an MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (UCD), an MA in Addiction Studies (DBS), a PGDip in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health (TCD), and a BSc in Psychiatric Nursing (DCU).

.Council Member: Dr Loretta Nolan BSc.(Hons) MRCSI DRCOphth FRCS(Glasg) FFSEM BL. graduated with a First Class honours degree in Science from UCD (1992). She completed her medical training in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (1997), undertaking specialist training in ophthalmology and practising as an ophthalmologist in the HSE since 2005. She also served with the Irish Defence Forces overseas with the United Nations and EUFOR in Chad. She studied law at The Honorable Society of Kings Inns and was called to the Bar in 2014. She was awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine of the RCSI and RCPI in 2016. Her areas of special interest include; legal medicine and the role of the coroner, medico legal aspects of sports and paediatric ophthalmology. She is a member of the Army Pensions Board, The Coroners Society of Ireland and is the Deputy Coroner for Co. Kildare.

Council Member: Aisling Timoney is Healthcare solicitor advising on the legal issues and challenges faced by medical professionals. GP Lead Counsel with Medisec Ireland, advising 2,300 Medisec members through clinical negligence claims, Medical Council complaints and Inquiries, Inquests and general ethical queries. Ministerial appointee to the Council for Health and Social Care Professionals as a representative of the public interest.  Previously worked in Matheson Healthcare team, Hayes Solicitors and the Medical Council of Ireland.  A regular contributor to medico-legal publications and an experienced public speaker. Currently a member of the Medico-Legal Society Council who shared responsibility for webinar coordination during the academic year 2020/2021

President: Professor Damian Mohan. Damian is Associate Clinical Professor in Forensic Psychiatry in Trinity College Dublin and  a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist based at the National Forensic Mental Health Service. He is currently the clinical lead on the Transition Management Team (TMT) with responsibility for relocating the Central Mental Hospital from Dundrum to Portrane.  Damian is a Medical Graduate of TCD.  After completing his Basic Specialist Training (BST) in St. Patrick’s University Hospital Dublin, he completed his Higher Specialist Training (HST) between the University of Southampton and the Institute of Psychiatry in London. Damian worked as a Consultant in  Broadmoor Hospital, West London NHS before returning to Dublin in 2001. Damian is a keen cyclist and sometime skier.  He is the current President of the Medicolegal Society of Ireland

Immediate Past-President (2017-2019):  Ms. Elizabeth Doyle Fleming BSc OSH, CMIOSH MIES is a chartered occupational safety and health (OSH) practitioner since 2005 with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. She specialises in OSH Risk Management and OSH education at third level.  She lectured in occupational safety and health at the Centre for Safety and Health at Work, University College Dublin and continues to be involved academically. With a professional background in the aviation industry, she is a founding member and an honorary life member of the European Aviation Group of Occupational Safety and Health. She joined the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland in 2006, was elected to Council in 2010 and nominated as Honorary Secretary in 2011 and re-elected each year to 2017. Liz was proposed and elected as President of the Society in June 2017.

Honorary Secretary: Ms Mary C Kennedy graduated as an RGN from St Vincent’s Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin. She continued her studies with an Higher Diploma in Healthcare from RCSI and a Post Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Risk Management & Quality from UCD and a Diploma in Law from the Law Society of Ireland. More recently she has completed the advanced Diploma in Employment Law in the Honourable Society of the Kings Inns. Mary was a Chief Nurse Officer in the Irish Prison Service (IPS) from 2008-2018 contributing to safer systems of care. Ms Kennedy is currently an Assistant Governor in Mountjoy prison. Her areas of responsibility include Health and Safety, Human Resource Management , Healthcare, and Infection Control. She is also the Covid-19 Liaison. Mary joined the Society in 2016 and is the current  elected Honorary Secretary since the Society’s AGM in 2019.  

Honorary Treasurer:  Dr Zetti Azvee, Dr Zetti Azvee, a graduate of the National University of Ireland and Penang Medical College, is in her second year of Higher Specialist Training. A Senior Registrar, she hopes to specialise in Liaison Psychiatry. Dr Azvee is an honorary lecturer with the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and her experience includes time in the Western Sahara and the Lebanon with the United Nations. She has been Treasurer of the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees and Vice Chair of the Trainee Committee for College of Psychiatrists of Ireland. She has a special interest in bridging the gap between primary care and specialist services.

Hon Auditor: Dermot Manning BL  has been a practicing barrister since 1992, a Chairman of Mental Health Tribunals since 2006, a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Board since 2013 and a member of the Radiographers Registration Board since 2020. He was Treasurer of the Medico-Legal Society from 2001-09President of the Society from 2009-11 and became its Honorary Auditor in 2018

European Council of Legal Medicine Representative: Prof. Denis Cusack BL, Coroner qualified as a medical doctor from UCD in 1980 and trained in General Internal Medicine & Diabetes/Endocrinology in Ireland and the USA. He qualified as Barrister-at-Law from the Kings Inns and was called to the Bar of Ireland in 1991. His medical specialty is Forensic & Legal Medicine. He was Full Professor of Forensic & Legal Medicine at the School of Medicine, University College Dublin (1991-2017) and at Penang Medical College, Malaysia (2000-2017) and is Full Professor Emeritus of Forensic & Legal Medicine at UCD since 2017. He serves as Director of the Medical Bureau of Road Safety and as Senior Coroner for the District of Kildare. He is Founding Consultant Editor of the Medico-Legal Journal of Ireland, is a Past President of the Coroners Society of Ireland (2008-2010) and the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland (2015-2017). He is currently President of the European Council of Legal Medicine and Vice-President of the Presidium (Council) of the International Academy of Legal Medicine.

Council member: Dr Simone Carton is Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dublin.  She competed her professional training in Clinical Psychology at Trinity College Dublin and then pursued specialist training in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Institute of Psychiatry and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, London.  Her clinical and academic work focuses on the cognitive and behaviour changes associated with neurological disease and acquired brain injury, in particular decision-making, personality change and factors enhancing neuro-rehabilitation.  She lectures in Clinical Neuropsychology at TCD, UCD, UCG, RSCI and RCPI to post-graduates in health sciences and engineering.  She provides expert opinion in legal cases and is a member of the Medico-legal Society of Ireland for over ten years.

Council Member: Ms. Aisling Gannon  is a  Partner and Head of Healthcare in the Dispute Resolution and Litigation Department of Eversheds Sutherland Ireland. Cathrina was called to the Bar of Ireland (Trinity 1993).. Cathrina practices on the Midland and Dublin Circuits and has over 24 years experience at the Bar acting for both plaintiffs and defendants, private practitioners and the State and has a special interest in the protection of vulnerable clients. She also acted as Chairperson of Mental Health Tribunals. She lectured on European Constitutional Law and European Law at UCD, DIT, the Incorporated Law Society and was a tutor in TCD. She was co-editor of 'Irish Perspectives on EC Law'. Cathrina is  an elected member of the Bar Council and Chair of the Arbitration the and Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of the Bar  and is an Instructor on the Bar Council advocacy course. She is also a member of the Family Lawyers Association.  She was elected to the council in June 2018.

She  completed a BSc in psychiatric nursing from DCU 2010, followed by a MA in Addiction Studies from DBS in 2012 and an MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in UCD. She has currently started a postgraduate diploma in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

President: Professor Damian Mohan is a medical graduate of Trinity College Dublin. He was a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at Broadmoor High Security Hospital West London Mental Health NHS Trust from 1999 to 2001 before returning to Ireland in 2001.He is currently a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist based at the National Forensic Mental Health Service at the Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum, Dublin.He is also Clinical Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin, Department of Psychiatry.  Prof. Mohan and his team have been awarded a number of prestigious awards nationally and internationally in recognition of innovative work carried out in transforming the delivery of mental health care at Mountjoy Prison, Dublin.  The World Health Organisation Best Practice in Prison Award which was presented in 2011. In addition, the ‘Excellence in Healthcare Management Award’ and the overall ‘Duais Mhór’ Award was also awarded at the 2011 Irish Healthcare Awards. The Taoiseach’s Public Service Excellence Award was awarded in July 2012 in recognition of their innovative work.   Prof. Mohan joined the Medico-Legal Society in 2011 and was elected to Council in 2014 and re-elected each year to date.  Prof. Mohan was elected President of the Society at the Society’s AGM in 2019.

Council Member: Ms. Mema Byrne BL  is a practicing barrister with over 10 years experience. Mema has worked as both plaintiff and defence counsel in many medical negligence actions and has a keen interest in both plaintiff and defence aspects of medical negligence law. In more general terms Mema is interested in the areas where the legal and medical worlds collide, and has for many years enjoyed the interesting array of talks provided by the medico-legal society.

Council Member: Dr. Fiona Donnelly has over 30 years’ experience as a qualified physician and has spent over 20 years specialising in Occupational Medicine. Having previously worked with a range of clients spanning numerous industry sectors including the HSE, Citrix, Injuries Board and Irish Life Medicals, she has the experience and knowledge to prescribe healthy practices for workplaces & workforce. Her educational achievements include the following: Masters of Medical Science(Pathology) UCD; Licentiate and Diploma in Occupational Health; Higher Diploma in Healthcare Management (RCSI); Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (Ireland); Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK).

Council Member: Ms Orlean Dyar, Solicitor, is an experienced law practitioner for more than forty years. She specialised in Property Law and in particular Conveyancing Law. Her specialty involved various Court applications of a varied and complex nature. Ms Dyar practiced law with Arthur O’Hagan from 1979 to 2008 and thereafter with Mason Hayes & Curran until 2017.  Ms Dyar also carried out Charitable Trust work and was an active member of St.Vincent de Paul for many years.  Orlean currently practices law part-time. She was elected to Council at the Society’s Annual General Meeting in 2019.

She graduated with a BA in Economics and Politics and an MSc (Econ) in European Affairs from University College Dublin. She also pursued further studies at Marquette University, Milwaukee, USA in Medical Science. She attended Kings Inns and was called to the Bar in 2000. She has lectured on the Degree Course at Kings Inns, developed its Continuing Professional Development programme and is the examiner for the Legal and Regulatory Aspects of Compliance Course for the Institute of Bankers, University College Dublin. She specialises in medical/healthcare law and pharmaceutical/ medical device law. Dolores was acting as Joint Honorary Secretary for the previous session and was elected as Hon. Secretary at the Society’s AGM in June 2018. 

Honorary Treasurer:  Dr. Mary Davin-Power MICGP MRGCP MMedSc is a Past President of this Society. She is a RCSI graduate and General Practitioner practicing in Trinity College Dublin. In addition to her clinical commitment she acts as GP Risk Advisor for Medisec Ireland.  Mary is closely associated with the Irish College of General Practitioners in the area of Faculty Liaison.  She has a particular interest in medico-legal medicine. Mary was acting as Joint Honorary Secretary for the previous session and was elected as Hon. Treasurer at the Society’s AGM in June 2018.

Council Member: Dr. Simone Carton is Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dublin. She competed her professional training in Clinical Psychology at Trinity College Dublin and then pursued specialist training in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Institute of Psychiatry and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, London. Her clinical and academic work focuses on the cognitive and behaviour changes associated with neurological disease and acquired brain injury, in particular decision- making, personality change and factors enhancing neuro-rehabilitation. She lectures in Clinical Neuropsychology at TCD, UCD, UCG, RSCI and RCPI to post-graduates in health sciences and engineering. She provides expert opinion in legal cases and is a member of the Medico-legal Society of Ireland for over ten years. 

Council Member: Dr. Fiona Donnelly has over 30 years’ experience as a qualified physician and has spent over 20 years specialising in Occupational Medicine. Having previously worked with a range of clients spanning numerous industry sectors including the HSE, Citrix, Injuries Board and Irish Life Medicals, she has the experience and knowledge to prescribe healthy practices for workplaces & workforce. Her educational achievements include the following: Masters of Medical Science(Pathology) UCD; Licentiate and Diploma in Occupational Health; Higher Diploma in Healthcare Management (RCSI); Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (Ireland); Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK). 

Council Member: Ms Cathrina Keville BL was elected to council in June 2018. LL. B Law Trinity College Dublin, LL.M, Masters Degree in European Law, University of Exeter, England. B.L - Kings Inns. Called to the Bar of Ireland (Trinity 1993). Stagiaire in the legal service of the European Commission in Brussels. Cathrina practices on the Midland and Dublin Circuits and has over 24 years experience at the Bar acting for both plaintiffs and defendants, private practitioners and the State and has a special interest in the protection of vulnerable clients. She also acted as Chairperson of Mental Health Tribunals. She lectured on European Constitutional Law and European Law at UCD, DIT, the Incorporated Law Society and was a tutor in TCD. She was co-editor of 'Irish Perspectives on EC Law'. Instructor on the Bar Council advocacy course and sits on the Bar Council Alternative dispute Resolution committee. She is also a member of the Family Lawyers Association.

Council Member: Professor Damian Mohan is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist with the National Forensic Mental Health Service and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry in Trinity College Dublin. His clinical interests include mental health law, development of mental health services within prison and psychiatric aspects of employment litigation. 

Council Member: Dr Loretta Nolan BL graduated with a First Class honours degree in Science from UCD in 1992 and completed her medical training in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1997. After completing basic general surgical training on the Dublin Regional Surgical Training Scheme, Dr. Nolan undertook specialist training in ophthalmology and has practised as an ophthalmologist with the HSE since 2005. Whilst on sabbatical from the HSE she completed a short service commission with the Irish Defence Forces and served overseas with the United Nations and EUFOR in Chad. On her return, Dr. Nolan commenced legal training at The Honorable Society of Kings Inns and was called to the Bar in 2014. Dr. Nolan was awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine of the RCSI and RCPI in 2016. Her areas of special interest include; legal medicine and the role of the coroner, medico legal aspects of sports and paediatric ophthalmology. Dr. Nolan is a member of the Army Pensions Board, the Medicolegal Society of Ireland, The Coroners Society of Ireland and is the Deputy Coroner for Co. Kildare.

President: Ms. Elizabeth Doyle Fleming BSc OSH, CMIOSH MIES is a chartered occupational safety and health (OSH) practitioner since 2005 with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. She specialises in OSH Risk Management and OSH education at third level.  She lectured in occupational safety and health at the Centre for Safety and Health at Work, University College Dublin and continues to be involved academically. With a professional background in the aviation industry, she is a founding member and an honorary life member of the European Aviation Group of Occupational Safety and Health.  She joined the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland in 2006, was elected to Council in 2010 and nominated as Honorary Secretary in 2011 and re-elected each year to 2017. Liz was proposed and elected as President of the Society in June 2017.

Ms. Dolores Keane BL  is a Past President of the Society and is a practicing barrister. She graduated with a BA in Economics and Politics and an MSc (Econ) in European Affairs from University College Dublin. She also pursued further studies at Marquette University, Milwaukee, USA in Medical Science. She attended Kings Inns and was called to the Bar in 2000. She has lectured on the Degree Course at Kings Inns, developed its Continuing Professional Development programme and is the examiner for the Legal and Regulatory Aspects of Compliance Course for the Institute of Bankers, University College Dublin. She specialises in medical/healthcare law and pharmaceutical/medical device law.

Dr. Mary Davin-Power MICGP MRGCP MMedSc is a Past President of this Society. She is a RCSI graduate and General Practitioner practicing in Trinity College Dublin. In addition to her clinical commitment she acts as GP Risk Advisor for Medisec Ireland.  Mary is closely associated with the Irish College of General Practitioners in the area of Faculty Liaison.  She has a particular interest in medico-legal medicine.

With a special interest in Personal Injuries and has been an Independent Medical Assessor to the Injuries Board, Solicitors and Insurance companies for many years. Dr Aboud’s GP practice has a high number of elderly patients and terminal disease suffers, and as such has a special interest in end-of life care resulting in a very good working relationship with the Coroner's office.

Mary runs a Menopause Clinic in Ireland and is a Director of the Institute of Women's Health.

Ms. Gannon is a Partner and Head of Healthcare in Eversheds international law firm. She qualified in law in 1998. Her expertise includes representing and advising healthcare service providers in both the public and private sector. Aisling is the course consultant on the Law Society's Diploma/Certificate in Healthcare Law in addition to sitting on a number of internal hospital committees. She is a member of the Academy of European Law and is an Associate Member of the Irish Health Care Risk Manager’s Association, the Mediation Institute of Ireland, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Royal Society of Medicine. Aisling is a member of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland since 2009.

She is a member of the Academy of European Law and is an Associate Member of the Irish Health Care Risk Manager’s Association, the Mediation Institute of Ireland, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Royal Society of Medicine. Aisling is a member of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland since 2009. 

Dr Mary Short 
Dr Mary Short is a Founding Member and Secretary General of the European Society of Contraception. She also runs a Menopause Clinic in Blackrock and is a Director of the Institute of Women's Health and a case study 59 year old mum of 2 Anne who started the menopause at 39 and was on HRT for 15 years. 
She is a Founding Member and Secretary General of the European Society of Contraception, she is also a Board Member of the Saffron Initiative. Mary runs a Menopause Clinic in Ireland and is a Director of the Institute of Women's Health.
